Is there a test to find out how healthy my eggs are?

March 16, 2007

I am about to turn 45, have never had children, and I am "very, very healthy" as reflected by my medical history and a current medical health check. Does this mean I can assume my eggs are healthy and therefore my baby will be healthy?

This is a very common question that is asked by many. Many people who are 45 can look and feel better than people who are 35. In fact, your heart, arteries and other organs if taken care of can function very well and better than most 45 y/o. However, the ovary is a very smart organ that has a "clock" programmed into it that we can't change. The average risk of 45 y/o having a chromosomally abnormal child irrespective of overall health is about 1/12. If you were to get pregnant with your own eggs, you'd be at high risk for miscarrying and possibly be a "high risk" pregnancy. Spontaneous fertility rates are also extraordinarily low and even pregnancies via IVF are not common. Most women whom you hear of having children at this age, whether Hollywood Stars or friends, usually use egg donors to get pregnant. Unfortunately, not many people disclose this informacion, falsely leading many people to believe they have a great chance to get pregnant at this age using their own eggs. We REs because of confidentiality also can't say otherwise. I don't want to discourage you, but if you're interested in having a child, I would suggest you contact an RE as soon as possible to further discuss your situation.

How do you get an egg donor?
